Shawnee Sunrise

What started as a time lapse quickly turned into a mini doc.

My business partner Stephanie (Main Street Media) is the founder of ARTSCO, an art driven community NFP in Southern Illinois. When it was time to start on a mural project in downtown Harrisburg Illinois she asked if I would create a time lapse. It was on the first day I decided to take it a step further and document the entire process.

Fun fact:

If you look closely you might find a small Sasquatch in the mural that lead muralist Josh Benson added as a tribute to the city’s annual Shawnee Sasquatch Festival.

10 days later the mural was finished, and with the help of artists Janet Bixler, Rebecca Williams, Stephanie Susie, and Sara DeNeal, Josh Benson led a small team of volunteers to create a beautifully bright piece of art that represents the towns history.

The city of Harrisburg was built by coal miners and farmers and has since become known as The Gateway to the Shawnee National Forest, an area in Southern Illinois that offers breath taking views such as Garden of the Gods, tons of hiking trails, and other hidden gems for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts.

Full Timelapse

I’m proud of this passion project and hope you enjoy getting a behind-the-scenes look at its story. To all those involved, from the artist, volunteers, Mayor John McPeek and his team, and all those in the community that drove by honking and stopping to appreciate the progress and give kinds words, I thank you!

Impromptu Interview

The below video is a conversation that we did not plan. Local artist and art teacher, Barb Allen, stopped by to admire the work being done and spend a few minutes inquiring about the mural. So, naturally I grabbed the closets camera (a GoPro) and just let it roll…
